The Arab British Centre is proud to present the course:
“The Art of Geometry”
Wednesdays, 18:00 – 20:00
10 June- 1 July (4 weeks, 8 hours)
Course Fee: £95
This short course is a primer in geometry as it is used in art, most famously in Islamic patterns but also in the sacred art of other cultures. Geometry is the most universal of arts, the underlying order behind all of creation, and as such it can be practiced by absolutely everybody, with or without any artistic background. It only requires patience, and is a highly absorbing and relaxing practice.
Theoretical and practical component:
Sessions are entirely hands-on: students will learn basic geometry skills, and then work with key numbers to construct figures and stars up to 12 sides. They will also learn their derived grids, on which all classic patterns are based, and draw at least two such full patterns.
All materials and tools are provided.
Joumana was born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon. A graphic designer by training, she learned the essence of Kufi script, the oldest form of Arabic, from master calligrapher Samir Sayegh, through years of close collaboration. She learned to breathe new life into a traditional art, not merely copying or reviving its old forms but finding a contemporary language for it. She is especially interested in the unique relationship between Kufi and geometry, both sacred arts. She now lives in London where her study of these fields is ongoing.
