GAZA WRITES BACK:
Worldwide Launch Event for A Collection of Short Stories from Young Writers in Gaza, Palestine
15 January 2014, 7pm
at P21 Gallery, 21 Chalton St., London NW1
To mark the fifth anniversary of Israel’s Operation Cast Lead, Just World Books is releasing Gaza Writes Back, a collection of short stories written in English by 15 talented young writers from Gaza, Palestine. At this worldwide launch event hosted by P21 Gallery, several of the writers, and the collection’s editor Refaat Alareer, will read excerpts from their stories and discuss what their writing means to them, their dreams and aspirations as writers, and the very challenging conditions that all Gaza’s people face today.
The evening will be moderated by Victoria Brittain, the former associate foreign editor of The Guardian and author of Shadow Lives: The Forgotten Women of the War on Terror. Book contributor Rawan Yaghi will be present in person. Mr. Alareer and book contributor Yousef Aljamal will take part by videolink from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Other book contributors, still in Gaza, will take part either by videolink or via pre-recorded video clips (depending on the power situation in Gaza.)
After the discussion, there will be a short reception. Copies of Gaza Writes Back and other Just World Books titles will be available for sale. Gaza Writes Back costs £13.
The book has received many rave endorsements. Ali Abunimah, the founder of the “Electronic Intifada” website says:
"Where Israel’s siege has sought to erase Gaza from our consciences and silence its people, these brilliant, fresh writers burst forth with stories rooted in their real-life experiences and elevated by limitless imagination."
Other endorsements—including one in which Ms. Brittain compares the writers with Ghassan Kanafani—and other details about the book can be seen at <www.justworldbooks.com>. People unable to attend the January 15th launch event can purchase the book online via that website.
