12 ANGRY LEBANESE
Debut London Film Screening
For years, Zeina Daccache, a theatre director specialising in working with disadvantaged and traumatized people, struggled to set up Lebanon’s first prison-based drama project in the notorious Roumieh Prison.
During 15 arduous months, 45 inmates, some completely illiterate, found themselves working together to present an adaptation of the famous play ’12 Angry Men’ by Reginald Rose, here re-named ’12 Angry Lebanese’. The film describes the dramatic build-up to the opening night, performed before a visiting audience, including the prisoners’ families and government officials. Brilliantly edited, and shot with humour and great humanity, the encounter with the inmates conveys both a message of forgiveness and hop as well as a passionate cry for prison reform.
Through their artistic journey, these “murderers, drug dealers and rapists” discover themselves and engage in a profoundly revealing – but sometimes painful – process. The result is an astonishingly gripping and moving journey leading to heightened self-esteem for the prisoners, and even reduced sentences for some. Inspiring and honest, this account of their journey demonstrates the positive effect of drama therapy and its affirmative outcomes on some of the most ostracised individuals in society.
12 Angry Lebanese has received wide acclaim in the international press and won First Prize for Best Documentary (the Muhr Arab Award) & the People’s Choice Award at the 6th Annual Dubai International Film Festival 2009- Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and First Prize (Audience Award) at the 3rd edition of Dox Box international Documentary Film Festival 2010- Damascus, Syria.
