Part of the Mayor of London's Shubbak Festival; London’s first ever celebration of contemporary culture from across the Arab world.

Charting the evolution of Arab identity from Ottomanism to Arabism to Islamism, Eugene Rogan's acclaimed The Arabs: A History draws on the narratives of politicians, poets, intellectuals and ordinary people to tell the story of five hundred years of tumultuous history through the eyes of the Arab men and women who lived it.

Including in-depth accounts of Egypt’s Nasser and the rise of Arab Nationalism, the political and economic power of oil and the conflict between secular and Islamic values, this multilayered and definitive work is the essential guide to understanding the history of the modern Arab world - and its future.

In the wake of momentous developments across the Arab world, Eugene Rogan will give us an historical insight into the region so that we can better understand the political and social context of today’s extraordinary events. He will also be taking questions from the audience.

Eugene Rogan teaches the modern history of the Middle East at the University of Oxford, is a Fellow of St Antony's College and the Director of the Middle East Centre.

The Arabs has been translated into Dutch, Spanish and Norwegian with editions coming out shortly in Arabic, Turkish, Italian and French.

Eugene Rogan’s talk will be followed by a drinks reception courtesy of the Arab British Centre.

This event is free to attend but booking is required.  Please email imogen@arabbritishcentre.org.uk.
