The Arab British Centre Presents
THE DEATH OF A TIME SLOT, NOT A MEDIUM
By LILY KEAL

NOW AVAILABLE BY APPOINTMENT
We are delighted to present a new art installation, The Death of a Time Slot, not a medium by artist and filmmaker Lily Keal.
The Death of a Time Slot, not a medium was originally conceived and made for the group show How Can I (or You) Resist exhibited at Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts) in June 2011. Lily was inspired by the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, an initiative by the late Palestinian literary scholar Edward Said and world-renowned composer Daniel Barenboim. The orchestra was created as a platform for exchange between musicians from Palestine, Israel and various other Arab countries.
A recent graduate of Goldsmiths, University of London, Lily's work often plays in the realm of political debate. Her take on documentary film tests the space between perceived history and lived memories. She maps out a string of historic events against individual gestures. The Death of a Time Slot, not a medium is an attempt to both engage in and problematize a dialogue between herself and the Middle East through the medium of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. Lily took up the dubious task of befriending members of the Orchestra via Facebook and requested that they play to her individually over Skype. In this installation the story of this endeavour is mediated through actors and presented in the form of a mock BBC Radio play and short film.
We hope you can join us for the Private View on Tuesday 29 November, 6-8.30pm. At 7pm Lily Keal will be joined by Nina Wakeford and Dr Edgar Schmitz in an informal discussion on questions surrounding modes of authorship in art, accountability and abstraction.
Lily Keal is a Fine Art graduate of Goldsmiths, University of London. Her work covers a wide range of topics both political and personal. in her video colllages a fight with a boyfriend or round of golf can lead to an encounter with the Armenian genocide or an exodus from Cuba.
Nina Wakeford is director of the research body INCITE, Reader in Sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London and is also currently taking an MA in Fine Arts at Goldsmiths.
Dr Edgar Schmitz is an artist and writer. He is the co-director of A Conversation in Many Parts, an international discursive platform for contemporary art and concepts, and a lecturer in Critical Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London.
