The Equity is in the Circle

Artist Talk: Oraib Toukan

The Equity Is in the Circle (2007-2009) is a two-year corporate intervention led by former resident artist Oraib Toukan. It purports to auction off nation states in the Middle East, under a 100-year leasehold. With an interest in both documentary and institutional critique, Oraib reaches out to real life experts for consultation on the steps needed to auction off this territory. The proposal eventually results in the creation of a branded corporate initiative, entitled Nayruz Holdings.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Oraib Toukan works across media in photography, video, text, and installation, often weaving public interventions and subtle absurdity in to her practice. Thread throughout her work is a form of play and underlying irony in the situations she creates for herself and the viewer. Oraib Toukan has a Masters in Fine Arts from Bard College, New York. Her work will soon be presented by Iniva at Rivington Place, as part of the 'Whose Map is it?' exhibition (2 June - 24 July 2010). Oraib is currently based in Berlin.
