FERTILE MEMORY: A FILM MY MICHEL KHLEIFI

gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 93Fertile Memory (1980, 99 mins, Palestine) a film by Palestine’s most celebrated filmmaker, Michel Khleifi

In this the first feature film produced within the Palestinian West Bank, Michel Khleifi’s Fertile Memory, written in 1978, combines documentary and narrative elements to examine the lives of Palestinian women.

Romia works in an Israeli factory and continually fights Israeli authorities for the rights to her family land. Sahar is a novelist, and finds a struggle in her life as a young, divorced mother. Through the voices of these women the film underlines their shared status as Palestinians living under Israeli rule, and as women in a male dominated society.

The screening will be followed by a discussion. All welcome.
