HRAIR SARKISSIAN

Artist Talk

Current resident artist Hrair Sarkissian (Syria) uses traditional documentary photographic techniques to highlight the paradox between the beauty and constancy of natural and urban landscapes and the social and historical realities that they conceal.

Hrair Sarkissian has shown his work internationally, including, most recently, Kalfayan Galleries, Athens (2010), the 11th Istanbul Biennal (2009), the State Museum of Contemporary Art (Thessaloniki, Greece, 2008) and Disorientation II (Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi, 2010). He currently lives and works in Amsterdam.

About the Artist
Hrair Sarkissian (b. 1973, Damascus) is a visual artist currently based in Amsterdam. His work appears to use the codes of documentary photography, at the same time as adopting a critical position towards the limitations of the medium. In his recent body of work, 'Unfinished' (2009), the artist documents buildings in Damascus and Amman that are undergoing construction work. In these photographic works, ideas around transition are explored through time and space, whilst the uncanny atmosphere of the scenes highlight both, the presence and the absence of the human figure in the architectural landscapes.
Recent exhibitions include the Kalfayan Galleries, Athens (2010), Disorientation II (Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi), the 11th Istanbul Biennale (2009), and New Ends, Old Beginnings (The Bluecoat, Liverpool, 2008).

Hrair will be a resident at The Delfina Foundation until September 2010, in collaboration with All Art Now, and with the support of the British Council.
