The British Institute for the Study of Iraq (BISI) Presents:

Khyam Allami
Resonance/Dissonance & Sound of Iraq Project

At this special concert hosted by the BISI at the British Academy, London based Iraqi musician, composer and teacher Khyam Allami will present his debut album Resonance/Dissonance and the BISI supported project Sound of Iraq. This concert will be in aid of the
BISI Appeal for Iraqi Scholars.

About Resonance/Dissonance
Khyam Allami's ambitious debut album was released in June 2011 to much critical praise. Resonance/Dissonance is a complete work, a whole. A result of many years of hard work and immersion, it is based on the concept of Maqam (the modal system of Middle Eastern music), and combines unusual approaches to the Maqams with original, highly structured and detailed “composed-improvisations”. Recurring themes and melodic shapes render a cohesive narrative, accented by a sensitive dynamic and rhythmic outbursts using unusual rhythmic cycles. All of which intertwine around complete
compositions and a dark rendition of the traditional Iraqi Maqam Nawa. Mystical in its lucidity and abstract in its poetry, Resonance/Dissonance is unique, soulful, beautiful, dark, heavy and hopeful all at once. More information on Khyam can be found at www.khyamallami.com

About Sound of Iraq
A project instigated by Khyam Allami in Sep 2010 to create a new Iraqi National Sound Archive as part of the Iraqi National Library and Archives (INLA) in Baghdad. The project's first step was to provide 3 months' training in sound archiving for two members of staff from the INLA at the British Library Sound Archive in London. The project is supported by the BISI and the British Council - Baghdad. At this event Khyam will be joined by the INLA trainees to present and discuss the project and its current and future steps. www.soundofiraq.org
