Middle Eastern Music Workshops
WEDNESdays | 12 Jan – 2 Feb 2011 | 18:00 – 19:30
Course price: £65

Working in conjunction with the Chelsea Music Academy, the Arab British Centre is delighted to host a four week series of Middle Eastern Music Workshops in the New Year.

The course will give an introduction to the rich music heritage of the Middle East, exposing participants to a wide selection of pieces from across the region and giving them an understanding of the rhythms, modes and improvisation techniques commonly used. It will also give participants the practical experience of playing the darbuka, or hand drum, and learning a well-known song involving singing or instrumental playing.

SESSION ONE: From Moorish to Modern Times
Join us as we revive a rich Middle-Eastern musical heritage giving a narrative of the historical events from Moorish to modern times. We will introduce participants to a wide selection of pieces by renowned composers from across the Levant region and North Africa.

SESSION TWO: Interactive Discussion
Through listening, interactive discussion and live performance, participants will explore rhythm, modes and improvisation in Arabic music.

SESSION THREE: Darbuka
Try for yourself the seductive rhythms of the darbuka, a hand-drum commonly used throughout the Middle East. A skilled player can tease a complex range of sharp and deep sounds from this goblet-shaped drum. It is an easy instrument to learn and has a surprising emotional range.

SESSION FOUR: Performance
We will round off the course with a group performance of a well-known Arabic song. Joined by professional percussionists and instrumentalists, participants will sing or play along – friends and family are welcome to attend the last session!
