Youssef Rakha and Randa Jarrar, in conversation with Sarah Ardizzone.
Born in Cairo in 1976, Youssef Rakha is a writer and photographer, author of the photo travelogue Beirut shi mahal (2006, Kitab Amkehan). He is currently working on his first novel and his poems are soon to appear in a book entitled Kull Amakinina.
Randa Jarrar was born in Kuwait to a Palestinian father and Egyptian mother. She is an award-winning short story writer, novelist and translator. Her first novel, A Map Home, was released to critical acclaim in six languages, and won the Hopwood Award, the Gosling Prize and the Arab American Book Award. She has lived in the USA since 1991.

Abdellah Taïa, in conversation with Schona Jolly.
Abdellah Taïa was born in Rabat in 1973. He has published five books in French inspired by his life; amongst them Le Rouge du tarbouche (2005), L’armée du salut (2006) and Une mélancolie arabe (2008). His work has been translated into several languages. He has been shortlisted twice for the prestigious French literary prize, le Renaudot. Abdellah Taïa is the first Moroccan and Arab writer to publicly declare his homosexuality.

All three writers have been selected as part of Beirut39, a collaboration between the Hay Festival and Beirut World Capital of the Book 2009 which celebrates 39 of the best known and loved writers of the Arab heritage under 39 years of age.
