Nadira Azzouz (1927-2020) was a pioneering Middle Eastern modern woman artist. Born in Mosul, Iraq, she studied Fine Art at the School of Domestic Fine Arts in Baghdad from 1944–49, and at the Central School of Art in London from 1957–60.
She exhibited to great acclaim at many international exhibitions from the 1960s onwards, and her work is in numerous private and public collections including the Barjeel Foundation, U.A.E., and the Associazione Genesi collection in Milan, Italy.
Although inspired by the many international modern art movements she experienced when studying and living in the West, her vibrant work is still strongly Middle Eastern. Her inspirations were drawn from ancient Arab illuminated manuscripts and verses, Sumerian and Assyrian architecture and art, and daily life, people and landscapes in her homeland.
Both visually impactful and meaningful, these paintings are also fresh to the auction market and represent Azzouz’s remaining oeuvre.
Mark Hill Auctions will sell works produced from the 1960s–2010s, with estimates ranging from £50 to £1,000, at 14.00 GMT on 5th November 2024.
