We’re partnering with Modern Films to support the UK release of Memory Box, the critically acclaimed new film by artist/filmmaker duo Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige. UK audiences can watch the film online through our Virtual Screening Room until 21 March.
Memory Box is about Maia, a single mother, who lives in Montreal with her teenage daughter, Alex. On Christmas Eve, they receive an unexpected delivery: notebooks, tapes, and photos Maia sent to her best friend from 1980’s Beirut. Maia refuses to open the box or confront its memories, but Alex secretly begins diving into it. Between fantasy and reality, Alex enters the world of her mother’s tumultuous, passionate adolescence during the Lebanese civil war, unlocking mysteries of a hidden past.
The work of the Lebanese-French filmmaker/artist duo interrogates the creation of images and representation, from the construction of the imaginary to the writing of contemporary history. Their feature films The Lebanese Rocket Society, A Perfect Day and Je Veux Voir (featuring Catherine Deneuve and Rabih Mroué) have been screened and awarded in major international festivals, and their artworks exhibited in prominent museums, biennales and art centres worldwide. In 2017, they were awarded the prestigious Marcel Duchamp Prize.
From Friday 21 January – Monday 21 March, audiences in the UK can pay to watch Memory Box online via our own Virtual Screening Room!
When buying a virtual ticket (£9.99), customers will have 48 hours to start the film and another 48 hours to complete watching it after that. As you complete your transaction, you will receive an Order Confirmation email with all the necessary instructions.
