Curator of SAFAR: A Literary Journey Through Arab Cinema

Joseph Fahim is an Egyptian film critic, a programmer and a lecturer. He is the Arab delegate of Karlovy Vary Film Festival, former member of Berlin Critics’ Week and consultant for various film festivals around the globe. He is also the former director of programming of the Cairo International Film Festival. He has curated various programs in the past ten years and in 2013, he embarked on a lecture tour about Egyptian film musicals in Germany. He is the creative consultant on a number of recent feature films, and continues to oversee a number of Arab projects in the pipeline. From 2006 till 2012, he presided over the Arts and Culture page of Daily News Egypt, Egypt’s only independent English daily and International Herald Tribune’s sister publication. His weekly column, The Reel Estate, was the longest-running English film column in the Arab World. He co-authored several books on Arab cinema such as “Cinema of Passion: The 100 Greatest Arab Movies”; German book, “Positions: The Arab World”; French books “Georges Nasser” and “Cinema of the Mediterranean”; and a forthcoming British anthology about Arab cinema. He has contributed to numerous Middle Eastern publications and platforms, including Al Jazeera International, Middle East Eye, Al Monitor, Middle East Institute, Newsweek Middle East, The Cairo Review, Egypt Independent and The National (U.A.E.), along with international film publications such as Verite and CineVue. His writings have been published in five different languages to date. He is currently working on his directorial feature, an essay film, and first solo book, about the late Egyptian film critic Samir Farid.
