The Friday Hangout

Devised as a way to encourage a sense of cultural community during the Covid-19 outbreak, and offer a platform for artists to talk about their work, the Friday Hangout series brings together people interested in Arab culture for an online chat over their lunch breaks, wherever they may be ‘staying home’ in the world. We’re a very sociable bunch, and we were missing our lunchtime discussions while working from home, so we thought we’d extend an invite to others who may be feeling the same. The Hangouts aim to be a friendly and informal space where people can share their creative experiences and connect with artists globally, and we’ve been overwhelmed with the response so far!

The first Hangout – which was a bit of a test run having only closed the Centre that week! – ran on 20 March 2020 and featured Arab British Centre trustee and award-winning filmmaker Saeed Taji Farouky as co-host. The following week we welcomed inter-disciplinary artist Manal AlDowayan as co-host, and began recording our sessions so that people who missed the Hangout could watch them too. On this page you will find all our Friday Hangout recordings from now on, as well as links to the upcoming edition.
