Join us at Asia House for an unforgettable evening in which traditional Arabic music meets jazz and folk in this celebration of the evocative voice of the oud—the ancient Middle-Eastern lute. Aged only 34, Joseph Tawadros is a world leading oud player and composer. A virtuoso of diversity and sensitivity, he has performed on the world’s top concert platforms, and made his debut at the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the BBC Proms Dubai in 2017, and a solo oud recital with original music for the BBC Proms at London’s Cadogan Hall. The solo performance will feature improvisations and own music by the artist, along more familiar and traditional pieces.

About Joseph Tawadros

Born in Cairo, and a resident of Sydney since he was 3 years old, Joseph was nominated for ‘Young Australian of the Year’ in 2014, received the NSW Premier’s medal for ‘Arts and Culture’ in the same year, and was awarded an ‘Order of Australia Medal’ (AM) for his services to music and composition in 2016. His recording catalogue of 14 albums has received four ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Awards – across 2012-2014 for ‘Best World Music Album’ – and as a contributor to Ali’s Wedding soundtrack album in 2017. His discs have been nominated a further 12 times.

Joseph is acknowledged for expanding the oud’s notoriety in mainstream western culture and has toured extensively, headlining in Europe, America, Asia and the Middle East. He has collaborated with jazz, classical and world musicians such as Ivry Gitlis, Valeriy Sokolov, Béla Fleck, John Abercrombie, John Patitucci, Jack DeJohnette, Richard Bona, Roy Ayers, Joey DeFrancesco, Howard Johnson, Jean Louis Matinier amongst many more. He has also performed and recorded with Richard Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Camerata Salzburg, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Academy of Ancient Music, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and West Australian Symphony orchestras, Morphing Chamber Orchestra and the Ukraine National Chamber Orchestra in Kyiv.

About Converging Paths

This event is part of the series Converging Paths, a year-long series of events curated for 2019, and organised in partnership by Asia House and The Barakat Trust. With this series, they aim to engage audiences in challenging cultural misconceptions about the Muslim world, improve relations, build bridges between local communities and highlight the importance of the arts that spurred in these regions. This is done by providing wider access, digital platforms and curated cultural programmes aimed at adults and families.
