Hekayyatna: How Did We Get Here?

26 September '24 at 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Join us for Hekayyatna’s September event, a thought-provoking town hall titled “How Did We Get Here?” In this gathering, we invite you to journey through the history and current state of immigration to the UK, with a particular focus on the SWANA South West Asia and North Africa region.

As we explore the deep roots of British colonialism and its lasting impact, we’ll examine how the British Empire treated its subjects and the complex question of citizenship that has drawn so many to the UK. We’ll also reflect on the reverberations of Enoch Powell’s infamous speech and how it has shaped modern anti-immigration sentiment and rising xenophobia.

This event is more than just a discussion—it’s a call to action. We’ll spotlight the lived experiences of Hekayyatna regulars who have sought asylum in the UK, weaving their personal narratives with the broader sociopolitical context. In addition, we’ll highlight the vital work of various organisations and advocate groups who are on the frontlines, challenging xenophobia and supporting immigrant communities.

Their stories and efforts will be at the heart of our discussion, offering not only critique but also solutions as we collectively ask
