Survival of the Artist

2 July '17 at 10:00 am to 5:30 pm

The Mosaic Rooms, in association with Shubbak Festival 2017, presents Survival of the Artist, featuring artists, thinkers and leading arts organisations from across the Arab world. This day of talks and performances asks how art is responding and can continue to thrive in situations of conflict and censorship.

We will hear from William Wells (Director of Cairo’s Townhouse Gallery, one of the region’s most influential visual arts spaces), Abdullah Alkafri (playwright, cultural activist and Executive Director of Ettijahat – Independent Culture, Syria), Selma and Sofiane Ouissi (founders Dream City, Tunisia), Shireen Atassi (Atassi Foundation), Anthony Downey (Editor in Chief of Ibraaz), Tamara Chalabi (the Ruya foundation for Contemporary Culture in Iraq) and artists including Larissa Sansour,, Maeve Brennan, Khaled Barakeh and Khaled Jarrar.

The day will feature two live performances, the UK premiere of audio performance For the Absent Ones, and Zarah Al-Ghamdi’s live construction of an installation about the loss of heritage in Saudi Arabia.
