Library

Our library is open to the public for reference and borrowing. Formerly a private collection put together over the past 40 years, it comprises over 2000 English-language books and journals relating to the Arab world in the fields of politics, history, religion, literature, art and culture. The library is divided by country and subject area, and includes both rare and classic titles.

Banipal-Arab British Centre Library of Modern Arab Literature (BALMAL)

Within the library is our specialist BALMAL collection of Arab fiction, poetry, memoir and literary criticism in original English and English translation. This unique collection of over 300 titles was donated by Banipal, in association with the London Book Fair, and includes titles by authors such as Mahmoud Darwish, Alaa al-Aswany and Ahdaf Soueif.

Banipal and the Arab British Centre started collaborating on the library in early 2008, resulting in the donation of the books after the 2008 London Book Fair focused on the Arab world, and the establishment of the library in summer 2009. The library was formally opened in January 2010.

All members of the public are welcome to join the library. A full list of titles is available on request.

As the collection is small, it is strongly advised that you arrange an appointment to view the books.
