22 March '18 at 9:30 am - 24 April '18 at 5:00 pm

Journey to the heart of one of Cairo’s most historic districts, home to over 1,000 artisan workshops and 60 monuments of Islamic architecture; several of which have been restored by the Aga Khan Development Network. A huge array of crafts are made in al-Darb al-Ahmar – from brass lanterns, to tent cloths, glassware, and furniture inlaid with mother-of-pearl using intricate designs that are unique to Cairo and, in some cases, to the district itself This exhibition captures the life and diversity of this remarkable district, and presents artisans at work, some of whom are part of a tradition going back a thousand years but whose skills may not last another generation.
