Film for Freedom: Screening and Filmmaking workshop

4 February '23 at 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm

About the event:
A workshop for young adults (11-16yrs) exploring the power of filmmaking to help people tell their own stories. In association with Makani, a charity organisation helping refugee women.

The afternoon will begin with the screening of a short film made by a Syrian refugee called Rima about her daughter. Rima joined Makani’s project Film For Freedom, which taught Syrian refugee women the skills needed to make their own short films.

After the screening, participants will be taught the basics of filmmaking, and helped to explore the themes of Rima’s film, gaining insight into the different experiences of children growing up in other places and circumstances, and the importance of having a voice.

About Makani:
Makani have spent the last decade working with Syrian and Palestinian refugee women, including running humanitarian, theatre and arts therapy projects and organisations, making documentaries about the refugee exodus to Europe, and building up a business empowering women through selling their artisanal fashion and homeware.

Makani’s Film for Freedom aims to bring the unheard voices of Syrian refugee women in Lebanon to the media as citizen journalists
