Friday Hangout #3 with Sami Tamimi

3 April '20 at 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm

Join us at our third Friday Hangout, this time co-hosted by chef and author Sami Tamimi!

The Friday Hangout brings together people interested in Arab culture for an online chat over their lunch breaks, wherever they may be. We’re a very sociable bunch, and we’ve been missing our lunchtime hangouts while working from home, so we thought we’d extend an invite to others who may be feeling the same.

We all know there’s nothing better to chat about over your lunch break than food, so we’re particularly excited about our guest this week. Palestinian chef and author Sami Tamimi was born and raised in Jerusalem and was immersed in food from childhood. Best known in the UK for the best-selling cookbooks he co-authored with Yotam Ottolenghi, Jerusalem: A Cookbook and Ottolenghi: The Cookbook, Sami is joining us with a new cookbook hot off the press: Falastin, co-authored with Tara Wigley, which they describe as ‘a love letter to a place and its people’.

Sami started his career in Jerusalem as a commis-chef in a hotel. He worked his way up, through many restaurants and ethnic traditions, to become head chef at Lilith, one of Tel Aviv’s top restaurants in the 90s. He moved to London in 1997 and, in 2002, partnered with Noman Bar and Yottam Ottolenghi to set up Ottolenghi in Notting Hill. The company now has four stores and two restaurants, NOPI and ROVI, all in central London. In his current position as the executive head chef, Sami is involved in developing and nurturing young kitchen talents and creating new dishes and innovative menus. You can check out Sami on instagram here.
