In her early twenties, Hiam Abbass left her native Palestinian village to follow her dream of becoming an actress in Europe, leaving behind her mother, grandmother, and seven sisters.
30 years later, her filmmaker daughter Lina returns with her to the village and questions for the first time her mother’s bold choices, her chosen exile and the way the women in their family influenced both their lives.

Goodbye Julia world premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard where it won the Freedom Prize.

Soraida, A Woman of Palestine (29 June, 17:30)

Feature Documentary

This documentary captures the reflections, concerns and imagination of a Palestinian woman, her family and her neighbourhood: the soul of a nation that is doing its best to survive the war and occupation. Produced 20 years ago, today it offers a portrait of life in Ramallah at the turn of the century and an insight into the daily realities of Palestinians over the decades.
